Advice for Tryouts

  • Throws, throws, throws. This game can not be played if you can’t throw. Practice and show a wide variety of throws - not just ones you’re comfortable with. Wide range of release points - high, low, wide.
  • Do the basics right - throw and catch with full concentration. Don’t look for the forward pass before you have the disc securely in your hands.
  • Throw to anyone who’s open, don’t look off anybody.
  • Take calculated shots - doesn’t mean be safe. Being safe will show a selfish game. Recognise what your team needs and execute it - if you are confident of doing so. This could also mean the best option is a reset. Don’t be afraid to reset.
  • Be a team player on and off the field. Support your team in ANY way you can. Be vocal. Be supportive. Be a part of your team - not just with people you’re comfortable with. Get to know people you don’t usually speak to - this is a great opportunity for it.
  • Play with great spirit. This is what ultimate is about.
  • Give a 150% effort. Never ever give up when a disc is in the air. Show everyone that you want it more than anyone else. Effort and intention is very essential.
  • Focus your attention. Get into the zone.
  • Look over your shoulder - not just at your person. Field awareness is needed. Play smart.
  • Follow instructions of the coach.
  • Don’t be late!
  • Don’t worry about your mistakes. Pick yourself up immediately and get on D. Everyone makes mistakes - it’s what you do after that counts. Get it back for your team - not just for yourself.
  • There’s immense learning that one can get through this. BE A SPONGE - absorb everything.
  • Don’t worry about stats, mistakes, or what the selectors are looking for. Play your game, bond with your new team and most important - HAVE FUN!!

Please remember - every national team is different, every coach wants different things from their team, there is no team with only super stars - it’s about filling roles that are required by the coach/team. So these pointers are not just for the upcoming tryouts, but for any selections going forward. Effort is always rewarded. All the best to you all!
